Chic D.I.Y Bookends That Will Make Your Friends Think You Have The Midas Touch

Chic D.I.Y Bookends That Will Make Your Friends Think You Have The Midas Touch

I don't know about you but I just loved the myth "The Midas Touch" recounted as a story when I was a child. There was always something enchanting in mythology and life lessons were also to be learned! The moral of "The Midas Touch" taught me that there is gold in practicality, so I have created chic but practical bookends that serve as inexpensive but elegant ways to hold your future reads.

In this article, I share a step by step guide to creating The Midas Touch Bookends and also The David's Apple Bookends. Be sure to subscribe to Tea End Blog to be automatically entered to win FREE tea/books/stuff during Tea End Blog Give-Aways. Already subscribed? Tell a friend!

Instructions

Step 1. Use a damp napkin or wash cloth to wipe the Faux Resin Apples and the Mini Chalkboard Place-cards free of any residue or debris.

Step 2. Bend the Mini Chalkboard Place-cards into a 90 degree angle. Use a book to make sure they are as close to 90 degrees as possible.

Step 3. Decide how you would like the Faux Resin Apples to be attached to the Mini Chalkboard Place-cards and score the Faux Resin Apples in the spot where it will be attached to the Mini Chalkboard Place-cards. (scoring ensures that the glue will properly adhere)

Step 4. Generously wet a Q-Tip and dab the wet end into the scored section of both Faux Resin Apples. (wetting the scored surface will ensure that the glue properly adheres as Gorilla Glue works best when the surface is wet)

Step 5. Add a pea-size amount of Gorilla Glue to the scored section of the Faux Resin Apples and attach to the Mini Chalkboard Place-cards. Hold for 20 seconds. Gently apply Painter's Tape to hold the Faux Resin Apple firmly in its place until Gorilla Glue dries. (you may need to use additional Q-Tips to clean the excess Gorilla Glue as it expands)

Step 6. Place the bookend on a disposable surface outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Spray paint the apple feature of the bookend using the Gold Metallic Spray Paint. Let dry.

Step 7. Use the Plastic Sandwich Bags to cover the apple features of the bookends and secure them with Painter's Tape.

Step 8. Spray paint the stand feature of the bookend using the Matte White Spray Paint. Let dry.

Step 9. Remove the Plastic Sandwich Bags to reveal your very own "The Midas Touch" Bookends!

The Mini Chalkboard Place-cards need to be bent into 90 degree angles so that they can properly act as stands for the bookends. Use a book to try to obtain a perfect angle.

I used Gold Metallic Spray Paint by Krylon but you can use any brand you think will look nice. You don't have to purchase the Rust-Oleum Spray Grip, I just so happened to have it from a previous project. Spray grips are great when you have an extensive project but spray painting these bookends is quick and easy!

Also, do not mind the bottles of white caulk. I used them simply to hold down my newspaper since it was a particularly windy day.

David's Apple Bookends

I also created David's Apple Bookends; bookends that resemble a stone apple chiseled by the great Michelangelo. I used the same method to assemble and spray paint David's Apple Bookends, of course omitting the gold spray paint. To give the apples a stone-like finish I sprinkled white craft sand on them in between each coating of paint.

I really hope you enjoy creating these simple but chic bookends. I placed the David's Apple Bookends on my nightstand in my and my husband's bedroom and the Midas Touch Bookends I intend to put in my newly redecorated office.
